Manufacturers in India are currently in the process of developing an extremely inexpensive laptop computer for students.
The computer will cost a mere twenty dollars and is expected to compete in the market with the One Laptop and Intel low budget laptop computers.
The Indian-made device will be WiFi enabled and the laptop comes with a 2Gigabyte internal memory. It appears there will not be many more applications loaded onto the laptop.
There is some confusion regarding the actual price of the hardware. According to some sources the laptop would only cost eight dollars whereas most media are reporting a price of twenty dollars.
The Indian product is much cheaper than other low budget laptops, such as the One Laptop Per Child one costing one hundred dollars or the EePC by Asus, which is between two hundred and four hundred dollars.
The development of the inexpensive laptop is part of a national plan to enhance the quality of schools and universities in the country.
India has a relatively young population with 550 million of more than 1,1 billion inhabitants below the age of twenty-five. The laptop is aimed at these young people.
Some analysts are sceptical about the low price and think it will not be commercially desirable to sell such a laptop.
